Meaning
Roles: focal = the big statement blooms a bouquet is built around; secondary = mid-size
supporting flowers; line & filler = tall spikes that give shape, and small sprays that fill gaps.
Seasonality caveat: wheel arcs and "British season" months are approximate and vary by year and grower; most of these
flowers are also importable year-round via the Dutch auctions (grown in the Netherlands, Kenya, Colombia,
Ecuador and elsewhere), so "available at the florist" and "in season here" are different questions.
Meanings compiled from Victorian language-of-flowers dictionaries and UK florist guides
(Gardening Channel A–Z ,
Almanac ); seasonality from
The Flower Artisan's UK calendar ,
Interflora's monthly guide and
Floristry Trade Club .
